EXHIBITION: Jenny Holzer (Guggenheim, NYC)

Very much the blockbuster exhibition, so much to see here and so much to digest. From the LED word strips dominating the Guggenheim’s familiar curved walkway, through paintings of silver and gold, metal stamped with Trump tweets, marble carved and smashed… I was stunned by the scale and diversity of the works exhibited.

There was a lot of very real, very controlled anger – about American society, politics. Words were key throughout and used very carefully – Holzer is aware of the potency of them and uses it well.

She also plays with contrast – between materials and messages (the Trump tweets on aged metal), angry capital italics on rainbow coloured paper, poems carved on marble – between colours and textures, between scale (from small to big).
