EXHIBITION: Vivian Maier – Unseen (Fotograviska)

Took a trip to NYC in large part to see this exhibition, having seen the documentary about these lost pictures, taken by a nanny in the 1950s and 1960s. I find it hard to put into words what I love about her eye, but it is mainly to do with the composition, the energy, the almost abstract images that she takes. I much prefer the early, square, black and white images to the later, colour, rectangle ones – they are much simpler.

Her use of circles and squares/rectangles is so powerful, and it feels as if you can fall into the images and remain there for days on end.

Below are some of my favourites.
