LONDON: exhibs

Took a trip back to the smoke last week, in part to catch some galleries. Visited the Whitechapel Gallery to see the Hannah Hoch exhib and was struck by her compelling and strangely contemporary photomontages (Photoshop was a long way off in the 1920s) as well as the serenity of the gallery space itself, particularly in comparison to the bustle of the surrounding area.

The Martin Creed retrospective at the Hayward Gallery was brilliantly bonkers – prints with broccoli, recordings of fart noises, neon, chair stacks and much more besides. It’s fair to say he’s not an artist to stick to one discipline, but it is well worth a visit for the shock value alone of some of his pieces.

Lastly I spent a lovely couple of hours enjoying the exhibitions and architecture of the Photographer’s Gallery just south of Oxford Street. Fascinating stuff from David Lynch (atmospheric b+w pics of abandoned factory spaces) and Andy Warhol (pics taken under different exposures and then stitched together to follow his typical grid repeat patterns).

A selection of my favourite images are below.

Kader Attia installation at the Whitechapel

Giant rotating neon sign at Martin Creed

David Lynch’s abandoned buildings

Andy Warhol’s stitched photos – this one is of Jerry Hall (with my reflection!)
